Comparison

Seventeen energy management systems, twelve points, one source per cell

We looked at sixteen other systems that steer a battery, heating or an EV by the electricity price, and compared them with Steward on twelve points. Every box in the table has a source. Where we could not find the answer it says Not published, not a guessed no.

The table covers Swedish and foreign vendors of batteries and control, aggregators selling ancillary services, a heat pump manufacturer, a smart home hub and the open projects closest to Steward: EMHASS, evcc, Predbat and OpenEMS. Home Assistant's own energy dashboard is included as a reference without optimization. Every cell rests on the vendor's own pages, manuals, app descriptions or documentation, with a link. We write method not published when a vendor says AI without describing the algorithm, and we never write a no without a source. We have not run any competitor's control in our houses, so the table compares features and documentation, not measured results.

Every row went through two steps: a first survey from the vendor's material, then a sceptical review where each cell was either confirmed, corrected or marked unverifiable. The wording of the cells is the corrected one. The confidence level per product is given in the table, as are the vendor pages that could not be fetched (Sigenergy and SolarEdge blocked fetches, two Enequi pages returned 404, as did Emaldo's Swedish page). Steward is judged on the same twelve points from its own code and documentation, and its limitations are listed under What others do better on the main page. The full research file with original wording, verdict and correction per cell is available on request.

Steward of the House (EMS Steward) (version 0.40.1)Easy House Energy (Sweden)Open energy management inside Home AssistantNo frequency regulation (FCR) or other ancillary services. Only Sweden and Portugal as electricity markets. Installation is technical.YesYes: loads of every brand with a Home Assistant integration; where none exists the vendor builds one. Inverter and battery are steered the same way, through the inverter's integration in Home Assistant; the vendor builds its own where the existing ones are not good enough.1234YesYes: Apache 2.0. The repositories are not yet public and the integration is not in the HACS default store.5678YesYes: the whole optimization runs inside your Home Assistant. Prices and solar forecast come from other integrations over the internet.9101112YesDocumented in the code and the documentation, repositories not yet public: exact optimization (MILP with HiGHS) plus four simpler strategies. If HiGHS finds no solution a greedy solver takes over.13141516YesYes: continuous battery power, 36 hour horizon, the plan is re-solved every five minutes.1718192021YesYes, as run hours in the same plan as the battery. No tank model: no temperature, no energy balance.1322YesYes, as an energy target with rolling minimums via select or climate. Never switched off. No thermal house model.2324252627YesYes: charges to a target SoC before departure (opt-in) or in the cheapest intervals. On, off and charging current 6 to 32 A.28293031YesYes: six Swedish tariff models with monthly top-N billing (default 3 hours on different days). Only a new peak above what the month already bills is priced.3233343536YesYes: 97 plain-language reason codes in Swedish and English, and the whole plan can be exported as JSON.373839YesYes, by default: read only is on from the start and load control is off. Four gates are opened one at a time.40414243YesYes: measured against what the inverter's own self-consumption would have cost on the same solar and load, with battery wear deducted. The baseline is computed afterwards, not measured in parallel.4445464748YesFree, open source. Easy House Energy offers installation and configuration as a service, quoted on request.56YesLow: no own hardware, loads through any Home Assistant integration, inverter and battery through the inverter's integration in Home Assistant.493450YesLocal. One anonymous report per day (version, country, position rounded to about 11 km, battery size, daily totals); opting out erases what was sent.51910

Optional forecast services have their own terms.219YesNone: hardware is integrated through Home Assistant.220YesLocal processing; the default forecast calls Open-Meteo, Solcast and Forecast.Solar can be configured.211
evccOpen source (evcc.io)EV charging and home energy controller, open sourceYesYes: hundreds of chargers, vehicles, inverters, batteries, meters and heat pumps from many manufacturers.221222YesYes: MIT. Sponsor-required components are excluded from the licence.223YesYes: on the user's own hardware, data stays with the user according to the project.221PartlySolar surplus rules and price limits plus a planner picking the cheapest (or greenest) hours before departure.224225PartlyPartly: grid charging below a price limit, discharge lock during EV charging, SoC thresholds; no day-ahead battery schedule.226PartlyPartly: simple heaters via switches, regulated heaters get adjusted power on solar surplus or cheap grid power.227PartlyPartly: SG Ready relays or vendor APIs; boost on solar surplus or cheap power, dim on grid constraints.227YesYes: departure time with target SoC or kWh; cheapest, greenest or standard; continuous or split blocks.224Not publishedNot published as a feature: the tariff docs cover energy prices only. Experimental load management can cap import at a fixed limit.228229230PartlyPartly: the plan view shows when charging happens and which strategy was chosen.224Not publishedNot published: a demo mode with simulated devices exists, no observe-only mode against real devices.231PartlyPartly: solar savings per session (solar kWh times price difference), cost and CO2; no comparison against an unoptimized schedule.232233PartlyFree; a sponsor token is required for many commercial chargers and telemetry (about EUR 50/year or 150 one-time).234235YesNone: own hardware, many manufacturers.221YesLocal; optional telemetry without personal data; vehicle and tariff clouds only when configured.221235
PredbatTrefor Southwell (public source, own licence)Battery plan simulator for Home AssistantSource is public but the licence is proprietary, not OSI-approved.PartlyPartly: about 30 inverter brands via templates plus a generic API; support is at various stages.236NoNo: source is public but under a proprietary licence, not OSI-approved; free for personal use.237YesYes: add-on or container on the user's own machine; some brands are controlled through the vendor cloud API.238YesPublished: simulates battery, solar and load 48 h ahead and optimises charge and export windows against a cost metric.239YesYes: charge, SoC target and forced export, four control modes.239PartlyPartly: models a solar diverter (iBoost) for hot water.239PartlyPartly: Predheat models heating demand as a load forecast; does not control the pump (planned).240PartlyPartly: car charging in the cheapest slots; integrations for myenergi, Ohme and Octopus Intelligent.239Not publishedNot documented: per-kWh rates only (Octopus, Nord Pool and others); no power tariff described.241PartlyPartly: a plan card shows each slot's state, rates, SoC and cost; what will happen, not why.242YesYes: monitor mode plans without controlling, and a read-only switch blocks all changes.239YesYes: daily sensors compare actual cost with a simulated day without Predbat and with no PV or battery.243YesFree for personal use; other uses require a separate licence.237YesNo own hardware; works with the listed inverter brands.236YesLocal; optional cloud services for solar forecast, tariffs and some inverter cloud APIs.238
OpenEMSOpenEMS Association / FENECON (Germany)Open-source EMS platform for manufacturersYesYes: bridges for Modbus, MQTT, M-Bus, HTTP and OneWire with integrations for dozens of manufacturers.244YesYes: EPL 2.0 (Edge, Backend), AGPL 3 (UI).244YesYes: Edge runs on site; Backend is a separate server for several sites.244YesPublished: genetic algorithm (Jenetics) simulating schedules over 24 h in 15-minute periods.245YesYes: Time-of-Use controller (grid charging, delayed discharge, peak shaving).246YesYes for supported devices: my-PV and Askoma take part in the price scheduler; generic relay control on grid and time.247PartlyPartly: SG Ready controller reacts to PV surplus and SoC; not part of the price scheduler.248YesYes: the EVSE cluster controller is scheduled by the energy scheduler.249PartlyPartly: peak shaving with a fixed configured limit in W; no monthly top-N function found.250PartlyPartly: the UI shows a planned schedule with operating modes against prices; no written reason per decision.251Not publishedNot published: the controller offers automatic or off.Not publishedNot published.YesFree, open source; the association is funded by member dues; commercial products sold separately.252YesNone: multi-vendor by design; developer-oriented guides, turnkey from commercial members.252YesLocal: Edge on site; Backend only when connected centrally.244

The short text in every cell exists in Swedish, English and German. The full sourced wording behind the button Show the full wording is in English, as in the review material.

How to read the table

YesThe feature exists and is documented by the vendor or in the project's documentation.
PartlyThe feature exists with clear limitations, or only for certain devices, or only through workarounds such as relays and time windows.
NoThe vendor itself says the feature is missing, or the absence is documented. Never an assumption.
Not publishedCould not be verified: not published, or the vendor's pages could not be reached. The vendor is welcome to fill it in.

The twelve points and why they matter

Brand agnostic
A system that only works with one maker's inverter and battery ties you to that maker when you later want to swap or add a charger or a heat pump. A brand-agnostic system can control what you already own and what you buy tomorrow.
Open source
Open source means anyone can read how decisions are made, find bugs and keep using the software even if the company behind it disappears. It also lets others check that savings are counted honestly.
Runs locally
When the optimization runs at home, control keeps working during cloud outages and your consumption and price data need not leave the house. Cloud services can change terms, start charging or shut down.
Optimization method
An exact optimizer (MILP) computes the cheapest plan for the whole day under all constraints at once, while rules and heuristics react to one thing at a time. A vendor saying AI tells you nothing about how good the plan is if the method is unpublished.
Plans battery, water heater, heat pump and EV
Battery, water heater, heat pump and EV compete for the same cheap hours and the same fuse. Planned separately they can collide and create an expensive power peak; planned together each load gets its right slot.
Swedish power tariff
Swedish grid companies increasingly bill your highest hourly average power per month, often the top three and often only at certain hours. A system that only sees the spot price can lower the energy bill but raise the grid fee.
Explains the plan
If the system can say in plain words why the battery is charging right now, you can judge whether the decision is sensible and trust it. Without an explanation you are left guessing whether an odd curve is a bug or a clever move.
Shadow mode
In shadow mode the system computes and shows its plan but touches nothing in the house. You can follow it for a few days and see that it makes sense before letting it take control.
Measures savings against a baseline
A saving is only real if it is compared with what the house would have cost without control on the same day at the same prices. Percentages from a vendor brochure say nothing about your house.
Price model
Free at purchase can become a monthly subscription later, and ancillary service revenue is often shared with the aggregator. You should know what the control costs per year before you calculate payback.
Hardware lock-in
The more the control depends on one maker's hardware, the more expensive it is to switch when the battery wears out or a better price appears. Low lock-in keeps your bargaining position.
Data privacy
Your hourly consumption reveals when you are home, asleep and away. A system that keeps the data at home, or sends only anonymous statistics that you can switch off, leaves you in control.
Review carried out September 2026

How we compared

We read the vendors' own product pages, manuals, price lists, app descriptions, warranty terms and privacy policies, and the documentation and licence files of the open projects. Where a vendor's page could not be reached we used distributors, resellers and installer guides and said so. We have not run any other vendor's control in our houses.

Each cell first got a wording, which was then reviewed by a second reading tasked with finding errors, exaggerations and gaps. The cell was confirmed, corrected or marked unverifiable. What stands in the table is the corrected wording. A No appears only where the vendor says so itself or where the absence is documented; otherwise it says Not published.

We never write rule-based or not AI about a product whose vendor says AI. We write method not published. Steward is judged on the same twelve points, and its weaknesses are included.

Are you a vendor and see something wrong or outdated? Write to kontakt@easyhouseenergy.se with a source, and we will correct the table and date the correction.
